Building a new app

How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in 2026? A Developer's Honest Breakdown

Short answer: In 2026 a simple app with one core feature typically costs $10,000–$30,000 to build well. A typical startup MVP with accounts, payments and a backend lands around $25,000–$60,000. Complex apps like marketplaces, real-time features or heavy integrations run $75,000–$250,000+. Who builds it matters as much as what you build: agencies often charge 1.5–3× what an experienced independent developer does for similar scope. Budget 15–25% of the build cost per year for maintenance.

I've built and shipped apps for over a decade, including my own apps with more than 1M downloads, and I've quoted plenty of projects. These are the numbers and trade-offs I'd want someone to tell me straight.

How much do different types of app cost?

App type Examples Typical cost (experienced independent dev)
Simple utility Tracker, calculator, timer, single-purpose tool $10,000–$30,000
Content or subscription MVP Programs, courses, paywall, accounts $20,000–$50,000
Startup MVP with backend User accounts, data sync, payments, admin panel $25,000–$60,000
Social / community app Feeds, profiles, messaging, moderation $50,000–$120,000
Marketplace / two-sided Buyers + sellers, bookings, payouts $75,000–$200,000+
Enterprise / regulated HIPAA, complex integrations, SSO, audits $100,000–$250,000+

These are realistic ranges, not quotes. Two apps that look the same on the surface can differ by 3× depending on what's underneath.

How much does it cost by who builds it?

Who Typical MVP cost Trade-off
No-code builder (you) $0–$5,000 + monthly fees Fast to test, but limited and hard to scale or migrate
Low-cost marketplace freelancer $5,000–$20,000 Risky. Rework is common and quality varies widely
Experienced independent developer $20,000–$60,000 Direct communication, strong value, but limited capacity
Small dev shop $40,000–$100,000 More capacity, more overhead
Agency $75,000–$250,000+ Full service, highest cost and process

I compare these in detail in freelancer vs. dev shop vs. agency.

What actually drives the cost of an app?

  1. Number of distinct screens and flows. Each flow (onboarding, checkout, settings, admin) is real work.
  2. Backend complexity. Storing data is easy. Business rules, permissions, real-time sync and integrations are not.
  3. Payments. In-app subscriptions, Stripe, payouts to other users. Every money flow has edge cases.
  4. Integrations. Maps, calendars, health data, CRMs, AI models, hardware.
  5. Platforms. iOS + Android with React Native costs maybe 10–20% more than one platform, not double. Adding a full web app is a bigger jump. (Native vs. cross-platform)
  6. Design. A professional designer typically adds $5,000–$25,000, and it's usually worth it.
  7. Certainty. A clear spec gets a tighter, cheaper quote. Vague scope gets padded estimates, or surprise invoices later.

What ongoing costs should I budget for?

  • Developer accounts: Apple $99/year, Google Play $25 once
  • Store commission: 15–30% of in-app purchase revenue (web checkout vs. IAP)
  • Hosting, database, storage: often under $100/month early, scaling with users
  • Third-party services: email, SMS, maps, analytics, AI APIs
  • Maintenance: OS updates, SDK deadlines, dependency upgrades, bug fixes. Roughly 15–25% of build cost per year. (App maintenance costs)

How do I reduce the cost without hurting the product?

  • Cut scope to one core loop. What's the one thing users come back for? Build that first. (MVP guide)
  • Use cross-platform tech (React Native/Expo) unless you have a specific reason not to.
  • Rent, don't build: auth, payments, subscriptions, push and analytics all exist as reliable services.
  • Skip the admin dashboard at first. Database tools or a simple internal page often do the job for months.
  • Have the decisions ready. Slow feedback adds weeks, and weeks cost money.

Where shouldn't I cut corners?

  • Payments and data integrity. Bugs here cost real money and trust.
  • Architecture basics. A shortcut that blocks growth turns into an expensive rebuild later.
  • Analytics. Without them you can't tell what to improve after launch.

How do I get an accurate quote?

Send developers a one-page brief:

  1. Who it's for and the problem it solves
  2. The core flow: what a user does on day 1, day 7 and day 30
  3. Must-haves vs. nice-to-haves
  4. Platforms (iOS, Android, web)
  5. Timeline and budget range. Sharing a range gets you a realistic scope, not a lower price.

A good developer will ask questions and suggest cuts. Be wary of anyone who quotes a fixed price on a paragraph. (How to hire an app developer)

FAQ

Can I build an app for $5,000?

Only a very simple app, a no-code prototype, or a low-cost freelancer with significant risk. For a real product with accounts and payments on both stores, plan for more.

Why do app development quotes vary so much?

Different assumptions about scope, quality and who does the work. Line up quotes by asking each developer what's included, what's excluded, and how changes are priced.

Is it cheaper to build for iPhone only?

Slightly. With React Native, adding Android usually costs 10–20% more rather than double, so launching on both is often worth it.

How much does it cost to maintain an app?

Roughly 15–25% of the original build cost per year, plus hosting and services. See app maintenance costs.
