Scaling an existing app
App Store Optimization (ASO) for Creator Apps: Get Found Beyond Your Audience
Short answer: Your audience gets you the launch spike. ASO is what keeps installs coming from people who've never heard of you. Target specific, winnable keywords in your app name, subtitle and keyword field (iOS) or title, short description and description (Google Play). Design screenshots that sell the outcome in the first two frames. Earn a steady flow of good ratings by prompting at moments of success. Then A/B test your store page. Creator apps often skip ASO entirely, which leaves free installs on the table.
ASO is a big part of how I grew Escape the Vape to around 10,000 downloads a month: the app ranks for searches by people looking for help, not just people who already knew the brand. Here's the playbook.
Why do creator apps need ASO?
Creator apps usually get most early downloads from the creator's content. That works until:
- Your content goes quiet for a few weeks
- The algorithm stops showing your posts
- You've reached most of your audience who'll ever download
App Store search adds people actively looking for a solution, like "home workout for women," "kettlebell workout" or "calisthenics program." These users have strong intent and don't need to know who you are.
Step 1: Keyword research
- Brainstorm how a stranger would search for what your app does. Not your brand name, but the problem: "glute workout," "workout plan at home," "beginner strength training."
- Use an ASO tool (AppTweak, Sensor Tower, Astro, AppFigures or similar) to check search popularity and difficulty.
- Pick winnable keywords. A new app won't rank for "workout" overall. It might rank for "dumbbell workout plan for women." Win long-tail terms first, then climb.
- Look at competitor listings to see which terms they target.
Step 2: Metadata
iOS App Store
- App name (30 characters): Brand + your most important keyword. "YourName: Home Workout Plan"
- Subtitle (30 characters): Secondary keywords, written as a benefit. "Strength Training for Women"
- Keyword field (100 characters, hidden): Comma-separated, no spaces, no repeats of words already in the name or subtitle, singular forms.
- Description: Not indexed for search on iOS, but it converts readers, so write it for humans.
Google Play
- Title (30 characters) and short description (80 characters) carry the most weight.
- Long description (4,000 characters) is indexed. Use your keywords naturally, a few times each, in readable copy. Don't keyword-stuff.
Step 3: Screenshots that convert
Most people never read your description. They decide from the icon, the first two or three screenshots and the rating.
- Frame 1 sells the outcome: "Get strong at home in 20 minutes a day" over your best screen.
- Put your face in it. For creator apps, your face and name are a trust signal strangers recognise from social media.
- One idea per frame, with short, large captions.
- Show social proof: "Join 50,000 members" or a press mention, as long as it's true.
- Add an app preview video showing the core loop in 15–30 seconds.
Step 4: Ratings and reviews
- Ask at moments of success: after a completed workout, a new personal record or a streak milestone. Use the native review prompt (SKStoreReviewController / the In-App Review API).
- Never prompt on first open or right after an error.
- Respond to reviews, especially negative ones. It's public customer service, and it shows the app is maintained.
- A steady flow of recent, positive reviews helps both conversion and ranking.
Step 5: Use the store features
- In-App Events (iOS) and Promotional Content (Google Play): list challenges, new programs and seasonal events. They can appear in search and on your product page.
- Custom Product Pages (iOS) and custom store listings (Google Play): build variants for different audiences or campaigns, like a "glutes program" page you link from a specific video.
- Product Page Optimization (iOS) and Store Listing Experiments (Google Play): A/B test icons, screenshots and descriptions with real traffic.
Step 6: Download velocity
Rankings respond to recent installs. Content pushes, launches and new-program drops from your social channels create spikes that lift your keyword rankings, which then bring in organic search traffic. That loop of social → installs → rankings → organic installs is the core advantage creator apps have. (Launch playbook)
Step 7: Measure and iterate
- Track keyword rankings weekly.
- Watch the product page conversion rate (impressions → installs) in App Store Connect and Google Play Console.
- Update metadata every 4–8 weeks based on what's working.
- Watch for seasonality. Fitness search spikes around New Year and before summer, so prepare listings and events ahead of time.
FAQ
How long does ASO take to work?
Metadata changes are indexed within days, but rankings build over weeks as installs and ratings accumulate. Plan on a few months of steady iteration.
Should I put my name in the app title?
If your name is known in your niche, yes, combined with a keyword: "YourName: Kettlebell Workouts." It captures brand searches and a keyword.
Do paid ads help ASO?
Apple Search Ads and Google App Campaigns add installs, which can support rankings, and Apple Search Ads also shows you which keywords convert. Start organic, then use ads to test keywords.
Do reviews affect App Store ranking?
Ratings and reviews strongly affect conversion from the product page, and indirectly rankings. Prompt happy users at the right moments and respond to feedback.
